The lounging on the couch in wondrous poses, fully focused on the world they entered through their screen.
My children grew up in the screen era. For a long time, I managed to get them to play outside in all weather conditions and indoors with toys. But once they reached high school, I had to surrender to the screen. And although I made efforts to encourage them to close their screens and paint, read, or exercise, I was surprised by the beauty of the scenes it produced; the lounging on the couch in wondrous poses, fully focused on the world they entered through their screen. The stillness and intensity reminded me of Vermeer’s letter readers, the reclining posture of the Etruscan grave statues. I have taken hundreds of photos of them, they barely noticed. Now I make sculptures from the photos that hang, naturally.
